Marangu Route: Budget-Friendly Trek with Hut Accommodation
Marangu Route Itineraries
The Marangu route is one of the most popular routes up Kilimanjaro as it is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.
The Marangu route is also the only route that uses the same path up and down the mountain, which contributes to it being the most crowded route on Kilimanjaro. It offers a comfortable walking path with a very steady, gradual slope however lacks diverse scenery compared to other routes.
In saying that, Marangu still offers a spectacular experience with good views along the way and is an ideal route for those who are budget conscious and want hut style accommodation.
Who is this for
Tailored for the adventurous spirit, the Machame Route is designed for those confident in navigating steeper terrains and enduring prolonged treks in challenging conditions. As a less frequented route, it promises an exceptional wildlife experience and places a premium on proper altitude acclimatization.
Key Features
- Affordability and basic hut accommodation
- Perceived as the easiest route (though additional day recommended for acclimatization)
- Most crowded route due to shared ascent and descent paths
- Offers a comfortable, steady path with less diverse scenery compared to other routes
- Ideal for budget-conscious trekkers seeking hut-style accommodation.
